Farnese Blue Diamond Auction

The 6.16-carat blue diamond with gray tones and a history spanning three centuries, Farnese Blue, was recently auctioned by Sotheby's. The diamond that originally belonged to the Queen of Spain, Elizabeth Farnese and which over the centuries was owned by four of the most important royal families in Europe (Spain, France, Austria and Italy) was initially estimated at $3.5-5.2 million.

The Farnese Blue auction started at $3.5 million and within just four minutes doubled its sales price to $6.7 million or $1.1 million per carat. According to Daniela Mascetti, Vice President of Sotheby's for Europe and a specialty of the jewellery department of "The Farnese Blue is quite simply an unforgettable diamond, and everyone who set their eyes on it was mesmerized by its extraordinary color: the rich blue of the deepest ocean. As was evidenced by the competition between bidders this evening, the response from collectors has matched our own excitement for this diamond ... Good jewels, well-designed, well-made, with a signature, with a perfect... slot in time, in age, do very well."

The identity of the new owner of the Farnese Blue diamond has not been revealed so far.
