The high-quality 910-carat diamond, found at the Leschette diamond mine in Lesotho in January, recently auctioned the diamond trade capital in Antwerp, Belgium. The 5th largest premium quality diamond, which has been named "Lesotho's legend," was sold for $ 40 million, or $ 43,956 per carat.
Although the buyer of Lesotho Legend has not been announced yet and has not yet been known what his designs are for the diamond, it is estimated that 10-30 high-quality diamonds of various sizes can be obtained from cutting. We are therefore looking forward to seeing what the result of cutting the Lesotho Legend and what jewellery will be adorned.
More than 60% of the proceeds from the sale of the diamond will return to Lesotho through taxes, dividends (the Lesotho Kingdom is a shareholder in the diamond mine) and other rights. These resources will be channeled into the 910 Community Project, which has been named after the weight of the Lesotho Legend diamond and will finance the creation of Lesotho infrastructure that will improve the lives of the country's inhabitants.
In addition, Gem Diamonds announced that in March two diamonds, weighing 152 and 169 carats were found in Lesotho's leeching diamond mine. The geology of the Leceng diamond mine, owned by Gem Diamonds and the Kingdom of Lesotho, allows the creation of large stone and is considered to be the diamond mines of the highest dollar value per carat. In 2018 alone, eight high-quality diamonds of over 100 carats have been found in the diamond mine.
