Silver is one of the precious metals, along with gold, platinum, and palladium. Silver has been used in jewellery making since 3000 BC approximately. Nowadays it's very popular and is used to make minimal, everyday jewellery, statement jewellery and even fine jewellery adorned with precious gems.
Pure silver (measured at 1000 degrees) is very soft, which allows silversmiths to create intricate silver jewellery, but it is not stable enough for everyday wear. For this reason, silver is usually combined with other metals, such as copper, to create alloys that are more stable and have a longer life.

Silver is timeless
Fashion in jewelry can change often and sometimes we prefer more discreet jewelry and sometimes more impressive, but silver jewelry always remains in fashion.
While gold jewelry is intertwined with summer and rose gold with winter, silver jewelry can be worn all year round. In summer they create a perfect contrast with our tanned skin, while in winter they complement our natural color.
Silver is versatile
The silver jewellery is discreet enough to be wear at work and fancy enough to wear in the evening. Silver jewellery fit women of every age. Although, silver jewellery is usually aimed at younger ages, mainly due to their lower cost compared to gold jewellery, they can give a more youthful tone to our appearance.
Silver is economical
Silver jewellery is not as expensive as gold. This allows us to more easily follow fashion and renew our jewellery collection, without spending a lot of money.
When silver comes in contact with air, water, and especially many chemicals, it deteriorates on the surface and turns black. This is the natural reaction of silver and it is something we should expect.
One way to avoid silver jewellery from tarnishing is platinum plating. That's why at GT Tsangarakis we make sure our silver jewellery is platinum (or gold) plated to protect it from surface corrosion.
If silver jewellery is not plated, we can protect it from tarnishing by gently cleaning them every time we wear them. First of all, we should keep our jewellery away from water and avoid contact with perfumes and body creams. Also, every time we take off our jewellery, we should clean them with a simple cloth, to remove any substances that may have come in contact with them.
Protecting jewellery from tarnishing during storage is also very important. They should be stored somewhere without much moisture, because it can also lead to tarnishing. For extra protection, we can store them with moisture-absorbing beads (silicone gel).
If we can't prevent it, we can remove the tarnish with a simple cloth, warm water, and some soft liquid dish soap. If the silver does not clean with this simple trick or if the silver jewellery has precious gems, crystals or other materials that should not come in contact with water, then you can try the special liquids or sprays for polishing silverware or contact your jeweler who can polish your silver jewellery.
