sunken emerald

An emerald lost at sea for almost 400 years near the Florida Keys will soon be auctioned by Sotheby's in New York.

The octagonal-cut emerald was found in the shipwreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha off the coast of Florida by a team led by treasure hunter Mel Fisher in 1985. The Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de Atocha was traveling in 1622 from the then West Indies to Spain, carrying Spanish nobles and valuables from Central and South America, but failed to arrive as she ran into a hurricane off the Florida Keys and sank. Among the wreck finds were 180,000 coins, gold and silver plates, and about 30 kilograms of uncut Colombian emeralds.

Proceeds from the auction, estimated at $50,000-$70,000, will go to support humanitarian work in Ukraine.
